Internet access options for Kofi

we feel strongly that the more connected you are the better the global network will function. Is it possible for you to work from a location that does get good cell network coverage? How about a university or government building?

Response from Kofi

Government buildings – libraries??????offices????? university ??? parks????

I am not too sure which government buildings I can use on regular bases. I am sorry but if my memory serves me right there are very very few community libraries around. It can take me between two to three hours depending on traffic to get to the nearest one. I would be picked up for loitering if I am always seen hanging around the university. Parks???? Hmm. A place of our own would have been ideal but not now - we can’t afford to hire a place now .

You see like many other Ghanaians I can send and receive emails + attachments (basic everyday internet stuff) but it is the speed to do things like an effective chat that remains a challenge. And yes of course there could always be reliability issues. Those who do video conferencing and heavily depend on internet for their activities have their own facilities with higher speed and bigger bandwidth. Some like GIMPA do hire theirs out but no don’t go there I can’t pay for it.

What I use now is reliable and if I should get the right signal strength and the 3.5 g signals it is fantastic. Unfortunately I work from home where the signal strength is is between 0% and 20%. But I work at all times and cannot every time go looking for a place with good strong 3.5g signals to work especially since I stay far from town and there is heavy traffic from my end to town.

May be I should invest in a number of the services provided by these ISPs. Many Ghanaians do that for the regular phone services. It is normal for a Ghanaian to have two or three phones all registered with different service providers.

I am still weighing the other options and perhaps will invest very soon in another service provided by another popularly acalimed ISP who has a strong presence at where I live. I may end up having a number of internet connectivity options and a probable high internet bill since I will have to keep both active all the while. - Kofi

Hi Kofi,

I split your repose into two places. I would like to continue this conversation here so that others might find it and better understand the reality of your situation. It is very helpful to know what the limitations are for you. Thanks for sharing this.

The other page that is referenced above is more like a wiki where we can document the options available and their prices as we learn more.
