Internet access options in Accra
Goal
The Goal is to have afordable always on internet access that can handle Skype voice calls.
Speed needed for Skype are 512/256kbps (down/up) so depending on what else you are using the internet for and the stability of the connection a 3G or DSL connection is preferred.
According to Jacques in Rwanda he is able to do Skype audio on his 2G USB modem. I tested the 2G speeds on my iphone and got 150/75kbps (down/up)
OptionsMobile
- mtn – 3.5 but a chocked system. You can have the your MTN registered phone in your hands switched on and you make a call to that phone in your hands and you will be told that it is switched off or out of coverage area. However there are others who claim that their internet service is very good. They have better coverage and may have a strong presence in the area where I live.
- kasapa, - cdma relatively reliable but slow and expensive. You buy top up units ( this is what I used to have before making the switch to Zain)
- Vodafone – broad band different opinions being expressed
- Zain – 3.5 or edge depending on location (this is what I have now)
- I burst - Though I do not know which technology it runs on I am told that their service is ‘super’ but very expensive. I am not too sure which of the service providers are their backbone but they have to go through one of the above, more likely to be vodafone.
In the U.S. you can get a 3G modem for $100 so maybe there are some cheaper options in Ghana as well.
